Course Description

True Confidence is Knowing Where You Are.

Extending your experience is a natural progression with enthusiastic divers, and for GUE-trained diving teams, Environmental Awareness is one of the most important aspects of their capabilities. Knowing exactly where you are, where your team is, and how to navigate underwater will massively increase your comfort and confidence to perform safe, complex dives with your team.

Why Take This Course?

The GUE Navigation Primer is designed to teach divers the advanced basics of underwater compass use and natural navigation techniques. It goes far beyond simply swimming in reciprocals; it stress-tests your ability to process navigational data while effortlessly maintaining the GUE standard of buoyancy, trim, and team positioning.

Who Is It For?

All autonomous divers should have the skills to navigate dive sites effectively. However, this specific primer is heavily recommended before attempting the GUE Documentation Diver, Scientific Diver, and especially the Rescue Primer, as those courses require subconscious competence in navigational skills.

Additionally, this primer will thoroughly prepare you to dive in reduced light conditions (i.e., night diving), ensuring you can navigate when visual references completely disappear.

What Will I Learn?

  • Complex Navigation: Moving beyond simple reciprocals to complex, multi-bearing navigation patterns.
  • Natural Navigation: Learning to read the reef, depth contours, and bottom composition to navigate without constantly staring at a compass.
  • Guideline Management: Introduction to using a Spool & Reel as a continuous guideline underwater—a fundamental skill derived from cave diving protocols.
  • Reduced Visibility: Executing all of the above skills safely during a dedicated low light/night dive.
