Extended Range Nitrox Diver
SSI Extended Range Nitrox Diving Course at XR Explorers is your first real step into the world of technical diving. You’ll go beyond recreational limits with longer dives, planned decompression stops, and deeper depths, all while using Extended Range Nitrox mixes and technical diving equipment.
This course focuses on developing solid skills in gas planning, decompression management, team protocols, and emergency handling. It’s where you learn to dive with purpose—whether you’re preparing for deeper exploration, cave diving, or Trimix. At XR Explorers, this course is taught by experienced technical divers who bring real-world knowledge and precision training to every dive.
Take Your First Step into Technical Diving—SSI Extended Range Nitrox Course
The SSI Extended Range Nitrox Diving Course at XR Explorers is where technical diving begins. This isn’t just about going deeper—it’s about learning to dive with precision, control, and a focus on safety and teamwork. You’ll be trained by instructors who have spent years diving in caves, on expeditions, and exploring deep, challenging environments. We bring that experience to every session, giving you the skills and mindset needed to become a competent technical diver.
In this course, you’ll dive beyond recreational no-decompression limits, using enriched air nitrox blends up to 100% oxygen for accelerated decompression. You’ll learn to conduct dives to a maximum depth of 40 meters (130 feet) while carrying and managing a decompression stage cylinder. You’ll develop the ability to plan and execute decompression dives, including proper gas planning, team protocols, equipment handling, and emergency procedures.
This course is offered in both back-mount twinset and sidemount configuration—however, if you choose sidemount, you must already be certified as a Extended range sidemount diver. We only teach in DIR configuration, which we include in this course at no additional cost, to ensure streamlined, efficient, and safe diving practices.
At XR Explorers, we hold our divers to the highest standards because we believe that technical diving requires discipline, consistency, and a team-first approach. This course isn’t just a stepping stone to deeper diving—it’s where you build the habits and skills that will serve you in Trimix, CCR, and Cave Diving programs.
If you’re ready to take your diving to the next level, the Extended Range Nitrox course will push your skills, challenge your mindset, and open the door to new underwater environments.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between Extended Range Nitrox and Extended Range Trimix?
Both are serious steps into technical diving, but they serve different purposes—and it comes down to depth, gas choices, and decompression complexity. The Extended Range Nitrox Diver course gets you diving to 40 meters, using enriched air nitrox with staged decompression and up to 15 minutes of planned deco time. It’s the perfect entry point if you want to start building your decompression procedures, gas switching skills, and team diving protocols in a manageable, structured way.
The Extended Range Trimix Diver course takes you deeper—up to 45 meters—and introduces helium-based gas blends (normoxic trimix). You’ll be managing longer decompression stops—up to 25 minutes—and planning for more complex dives with helium to keep you sharp and reduce narcosis. If you already have solid foundations, we often recommend skipping straight to Trimix, because it gives you a much safer and more versatile platform for deeper diving.
Should I take Extended Range Nitrox first, or go straight into Trimix?
It depends on you. If you feel like you need to build your technical skills gradually, Extended Range Nitrox is a great place to start. You’ll get comfortable with decompression planning, gas switching, and carrying a stage cylinder, all while staying within the more forgiving limits of 40 meters and 15 minutes of deco.
But if you’re already confident in your buoyancy, trim, and team diving, then going straight into Extended Range Trimix makes sense. It covers everything you learn in Nitrox—and then some. You’ll dive deeper, stay longer, and start mastering the helium-based dive planning you need for more advanced dives. We’ll help you figure out which path makes sense when we talk.
Why is helium (Trimix) better than air for deeper dives?
Once you start going deeper—beyond 30 meters—narcosis and gas density can become serious problems. Adding helium into your mix reduces both. Trimix gives you clearer thinking, less work of breathing, and makes you a better, safer diver at depth. It’s not just about safety; it makes deep diving easier and more comfortable, allowing you to stay sharp during deco stops and emergencies.
What skills will I learn in these courses?
Both courses sharpen your decompression procedures, gas switching, and team diving skills. You’ll learn buoyancy, trim, and propulsion techniques so you can hover motionless and stay in position with your team. We’ll drill emergency procedures like valve failures, out-of-gas scenarios, and lost gas protocols. You’ll also learn how to deploy a DSMB, run ascent lines, and manage complex dive planning, including CNS/OTU tracking and gas consumption calculations.
In Trimix, we take it a step further with helium dive planning, longer decompression management, and additional team protocols. You’ll finish with a complete skillset for serious technical diving.
Is the cost of helium (Trimix gas) included in the course price?
No. Due to fluctuating helium prices, the cost of Trimix gas for both the student and instructor is not included in the course fee. This cost is calculated separately based on current helium prices, which typically range from €0.08 to €0.10 per liter. You will be provided with a clear estimate before training begins.
Is this training physically and mentally demanding?
Yes—and it should be. Technical diving requires discipline, focus, and teamwork. We’ll push you to meet a high standard because that’s what keeps you safe at depth. You’ll leave these courses with a whole new level of confidence in your ability to manage complex dives, support your team, and make the right decisions when it matters.
Why does the Extended Range Nitrox/Trimix Course cost more at XR Explorers—and why is it worth it?
At XR Explorers, we don’t compete on price—we compete on quality, safety, and results. The Extended Range Foundations Course isn’t a quick, easy certification. It’s a highly focused, skills-intensive program taught by instructors with years of real-world technical diving and CCR experience.
Here’s why it’s worth the investment:
We believe that bigger investments come with bigger commitments, and we are fully committed to delivering exceptional training, not just certifications. The Extended Range Foundations Course isn’t designed to be the cheapest option—it’s designed to be the best investment you can make in your diving future.
You’re training with instructors who live and breathe technical diving. Our team has years of experience in deep diving, cave exploration, CCR, mixed gas, and expedition diving, and we bring that hard-earned knowledge to every course.
We maintain very small class sizes—often one-on-one or with a tight-knit team—because real skill development takes time, personal attention, and honest feedback.
You’ll get more time in the water, practicing the fundamentals that matter: buoyancy, trim, propulsion, gas management, team protocols, and emergency response. This level of coaching ensures that you leave with mastery, not just competency.
We teach strictly following the DIR (Doing It Right) philosophy, which emphasizes team-oriented, streamlined, and efficient diving practices. DIR diving requires precision and commitment—qualities we expect from ourselves and those we train.
Our instructors are not just teachers—they are active explorers and technical divers, applying these skills in the most demanding underwater environments.
This course is a foundation, but it’s also a commitment—to higher standards, to becoming a safer and more capable diver, and to being part of a global community of professionals who value excellence over shortcuts.
If you’re looking for fast, cheap, and easy, we’re not the place. But if you’re serious about your diving and want training that prepares you for technical, overhead, and expedition diving, XR Explorers will give you the quality, mentorship, and results you’re investing in.
